Starting December 13, 2024, the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) will come into effect across the EU. This new regulation introduces stricter requirements for product safety and transparency, impacting all online retailers. Hence, the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) is designed to ensure strong consumer protection across the European Union. It entails rules for merchants, manufacturers, and other stakeholders.
Before the GPSR, product safety was governed by Directive 2001/95/EC. Since the GPSR is a regulation, it does not need to be converted into national law to take effect. Published in May 2023, the regulation will be fully enforceable after a transition period of 18 months. These new requirements may require significant effort to implement for businesses, so it’s important to start preparing your online store now to ensure compliance with the EU regulation.
The GPSR applies to many parties in the EU supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, distributors, and online merchants. Online merchants are directly impacted, even if they do not produce the products they sell. If you sell products under your own name or brand, you are considered a manufacturer under the GPSR. The same applies if you modify a product in a way that affects its safety and requires a new assessment.
Under GPSR, webshops must clearly display specific product information, including:
In collaboration with Memo, implementing meeting compliance requirements for your webshop is simple and efficient.
To display the necessary information for GPSR compliance, go to Settings > Shop > Essential Characteristics in Shopware. Start by creating a template that includes the required details. In the "Values" section, enter the data you want to show in the store. Click "Add field," choose the data type, and complete the form. Then, assign the template to a product. The "Essential Characteristics" section will appear in the product details, and Shopware will display the information directly on the product page during checkout.
You first navigate to Settings > System > Custom fields or use the API to create custom field sets. Next, define the data type for each field (e.g., "Text") and assign the set to an entity, such as products. Finally,
ou can create multiple custom fields for products or assign custom fields to the "Manufacturer" entity for supplier-related information.
