If your traffic looks fine but your revenue does not, you are not imagining it. According to the Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor, Dutch consumers made 3% more online purchases in the first half of 2026, while the average amount per purchase dropped from €103 to €100. People are buying more often and spending less each time.
The Twinkle100, published on 8 October, adds the uncomfortable context. Total online consumer spending in the Netherlands fell by 1% to €35.7 billion in 2025, and the top 10 webshops alone now account for roughly €15 billion of it. The biggest players are growing faster than the market, which means the squeeze lands on everyone else. Add the fact that one in seven Dutch online purchases is now made at a foreign webshop, and the picture is clear: the fight for the cautious consumer has rarely been this crowded.
With Black Friday on 27 November, about five weeks away, this is not the moment for a replatforming project or a new design. It is exactly the moment for conversion optimization: getting more value out of the visitors you already have. In this article we walk through what the fresh numbers mean, which tactics raise order value without eating your margin, and what you can realistically still implement before the peak.
What the fresh Dutch numbers actually say
Put the two reports side by side and a strategy falls out of them. The Markt Monitor shows a stable market of €17.1 billion in online spending for the first half of 2026, carried by more purchases at a lower average value. It also shows that 73% of Dutch online purchases are paid with iDEAL/Wero, and that the smartphone now accounts for 45% of purchases but only 35% of spending: people buy on their phone, but the big orders still happen elsewhere, often because mobile checkouts make large orders harder than they should be.
The Twinkle100 shows where the growth went: to the top of the ranking. Products grew by 2% while services shrank, and purchases at foreign webshops rose 9%, with China taking 31% of them.
None of these numbers are levers you control. Marketing budgets, however, chase the same shrinking wallet, so buying your way out of this with traffic gets more expensive every quarter. The two levers you do control are your conversion rate and your average order value. Everything below works on one of those two.
Raise order value without discounting
The AOV drop from €103 to €100 sounds small, but across a year of orders it is the difference a whole campaign is supposed to make. The good news: raising order value is mostly configuration work, not development.
Product bundles. Since Shopware 6.7.15, released on 1 October, Product Bundles are a stable core feature. Combine a bestseller with a slow mover or a logical accessory at a modest package advantage, and you raise the order value while clearing stock you would otherwise discount in January.
Cross-selling and upselling where the decision happens. Accessories and consumables belong on the product page, small add-ons in the cart. Keep it to two or three genuinely relevant suggestions; a wall of "others also bought" does the opposite.
A free-shipping threshold just above your AOV. If your average order is €100, free shipping from €120 gives a large share of customers a concrete reason to add one more item. Check what the extra shipping costs you against what the extra items earn; in most assortments this is the fastest AOV tactic there is.
Volume incentives. For consumables and B2B assortments, tiered pricing does the same work bundles do elsewhere. It rewards the larger order instead of discounting the small one.
Convert the traffic you already have
The second lever is making sure fewer of your current visitors leave without buying.
Start with the checkout. Every extra field and forced account costs real orders, and with 45% of purchases happening on a smartphone, test the whole funnel on a phone, not on your office monitor. Payment methods deserve a check this quarter anyway: the transition from iDEAL to Wero is happening right now, and we listed what webshop owners need to verify in their checkout this month.
Then there is speed. Slow pages quietly tax every campaign you run in Q4, and the releases you push before your code freeze can make things worse without anyone noticing. How we catch that at every release with Hypernode, RUMvision and Tideways is described in the power trio for a faster webshop.
Repeat customers: the cheapest growth in a shrinking market
When acquisition gets expensive, retention is where the margin lives. A customer who comes back does not need to be bought again, and the cautious consumer the Markt Monitor describes is exactly the customer who returns to shops they trust.
Three places to look before the peak. First, post-purchase email flows: an order confirmation, a shipping update and a well-timed follow-up outperform most ad budgets. Second, account creation after the sale instead of before it: let people buy as a guest, then make saving their details worthwhile. Third, service as the differentiator: fast delivery, easy returns and reachable support are precisely where a Dutch webshop beats the foreign platforms that now take one in seven purchases.
What you can still do before 27 November
An honest list, because the weeks are counting down. Still realistic: switching on product bundles, adjusting your free-shipping threshold, a mobile checkout test, two or three cross-sell placements, your e-mail flows, and a measurement baseline so you can see what the peak does to your shop. Not realistic anymore: replatforming, a new ERP integration or a redesign. Park those for Q1, when the pressure is off and structural work on your shop gets the attention it needs.

The fresh Dutch numbers do not describe a crisis; they describe a market where the easy growth is gone and the shops that win are the ones that convert better and sell more per order. Five weeks before Black Friday, that is good news: both of those are in your hands this month.
